Although nutrition is important in every phase of life, it is especially important during pregnancy. The mother is responsible for providing her unborn baby with the vitamins and nutrients that he or she needs to develop properly and have a healthy pregnancy and childbirth. There are prenatal vitamins on the market that are key to proper growth during pregnancy.

During pregnancy, a women’s body is changing in many ways, and has different nutritional needs than before. The baby is relying on the mother to provide him or her with everything they need, and is therefore using part of what the mother eats. When you hear the phrase “eating for two” it is because she actually is. Whatever the mother eats, the baby eats and that is important to remember when it is time to plan the next meal.

Some of the key nutrients that a woman needs the most of during her pregnancy are folic acid and calcium. Folic acid helps prevent certain types of birth defects that can occur without proper intake of the vitamin. Most daily vitamins and prenatal vitamins come enhanced with extra folic acid. Calcium is another very important nutrient the pregnant mother needs. The baby is using a lot of calcium from the mother during developmental processes and the mother needs to not only supply herself with plenty of calcium, but assure she has enough for the baby as well.

In addition to nutrients the mother needs during pregnancy, there are also foods that should be avoided at all times and have potentially dangerous effects on the baby. Alcohol, caffeine, shell fish and any kind of raw meats should be strictly off limits during pregnancy, there are no safe limits as to how much should be consumed, and should therefore be avoided. Pregnancy is an important time in a woman’s life, and it is more important than any other time to eat the proper foods and stay healthy.
