Itching

Itching or pruritus is not a disease but is a very common problem which is faced by almost everyone. It is simply defined as an itchy sensation on a particular part of body; the sensation is so strong and profound that it forces the person to scratch that area to get little relief. However, scratching of the skin causes inflammation, color of the skin becomes red and it cause pain as well. Itching can affect any part of the body. Itching can be caused due to any reason it can be due to insect bite or may be due to excess sweat. Itching may affect a small portion of the skin or may affect different parts of the body. Though the severity of itching depends upon its causes, it is very painful and irritating. It is also sad that normally people scratch the affected area with their nails, which may lead to further pain and infection. This article will explain everything about itching and the best and effective home remedies to get fast relief. In ayurveda it is known as kandu. It generally occurs due to involvement of vata and kapha dosha

Itching Causes

Skin infection, itching skin can be caused due to several reasons. It can be anything from insect bite to problem in liver, diabetes, etc. Medical science has shown that itching is very common in pregnant ladies, especially during the third month and scratching also leads to deep patches on the skin. Itching around the genitals, especially in the anal is due to infection and piles. Person with poor functioning of heart, lung, lever, suffer severe itching in different parts of his body. Different skin disease like eczema or other diseases like measles, varicella also causes itching. Lack of iron also is responsible for itching. Insects bite or accumulation of sweat between the fingers causes severe itching. Itching caused due to insect bite can be temporary; however, some insect bite results in severe wound on the skin. Climate too has effect on our skin, scorching heat during summer cause severe itching in the body. Similarly, skin becomes dry during winter and cause itching. Lices or ringworm also causes itching. Itching sometimes is also a reaction or side effect of strong medicines taken for the treatment of other chronic disease. Whatever may be the cause, itching is very irritating and painful. Given below are the effective home remedies for the treatment of itching.

Itching Diet

A good healthy food habit should be developed in every human being. Balanced diet that is nutrient-rich food is the remedy of all the disease. Patient suffering from itching skin should eat lots of green leafy vegetables, should strictly avoid junk or oily and spicy food, and also should take fresh fruits. Patient should also record which food increase the itching tendency in their body, and should avoid those food items. Vitamin B and E is very effective in controlling the itching tendency.

There are several herbs like chickweed which plays vital role in treating itching skin. This herb can be soaked in water and once the herbs become soft, scrub the skin with it.

Other herbs for treating itching are burdock, plantain, etc.

Apart from all the above mentioned helpful home remedies, people suffering from itching should always take bath in lukewarm water and not hot water, should keep his body clean, should always use medicated soap. People with dry skin should use good quality moisturizer immediately after the bath. However, before applying any ointment or lotion, and also otherwise, one should always use clean towel and should keep the skin dry, moisture free. These moistures when accumulated in the joints cause ringworm, etc. Avoid scratching with finger nails and keep them short. Also wear clothes according to your skin type and it should we well fitted or little loose, but should not be very tight.

Itching Symptoms

Person suffering from itching has a tendency of scratching the affected area most of the time and that makes the situation more difficult. The major symptoms of itching are: Hot sensation around the skin, skin becomes red and dry; scratch marks and patches appear on the skin, skin becomes blistered.

Home Remedies for Itching

Lemon juice:

It is one of an effective remedy for the treatment of itching. Take equal amount (1-2 tablespoon) of lemon extract, ghrit kumari (Aloe Vera) and oils rich in Vitamin E. Apply this oil mixture around the infected area. This will sooth the skin and relieve from itching. This is one of the useful home remedies for itching.

Eucalyptus amygdalina or peppermint:

Another easy remedy is add little amount of Eucalyptus amygdalina in water and bath. This will give a great healing effect. People suffering from itching may also add grain or cornstarch in the water before bathing. Add 2-3 drops of peppermint oil in the bath tub. Taking bath in this peppermint-rich water gives soothing effect and relieves from pain. This is one of the good home remedies for itching.

Vinegar

Vinegar extracted from apple too can be added to the bath tub. This too helps in soothing the effected skin. This is one of the important home remedies for itching.

Similarly, add cornstarch, oatmeal, baking soda to the bath tub. All this give fast relief from itching and sooths the effected area.
