Indigestion

Improper functioning of digestive system leads to indigestion or stomach upset, as a result there is amalpitta (chest burns), aruchi (unpleasant taste) in the mouth, nausea, tendency of vomiting, atop (heaviness in the abdomen) and discomfort. It is known as ajirn in ayurveda.

Indigestion Causes

Stress or worries is the main cause for indigestion.

In taking excess allopathic medicines cause indigestion.

There is indigestion at the time of pregnancy.

Excess smoking habit also leads to indigestion.

In taking caffeine, tea in an empty stomach causes gas formation and indigestion.

In taking alcohol, various diseases like ulcer which hampers the functioning of digestive system also cause indigestion.

Eating heavy foods, swallowing of food or quick eating also causes indigestion.

Do's & Don'ts for Indigestion

Regularly do exercise as it keeps your body in shape, keeps weight under control, and prevents indigestion.

Drink plenty of water.

Eat simple and light foods, green and fibrous vegetables, low fat, and less oily foods.

Always wear comfortable and good fabric cloth.

Get rid of smoking habit as it causes not only indigestion but various other diseases.

Relax yourself by doing meditation and yoga and keep a good balance between work and rest.

Avoid alcohol, caffeine, tea, beverages and chocolates as all these create more complication and causes indigestion.

Avoid playing and doing heavy physical work just after your lunch.

Avoid taking heavy meals eating 4-5 small meals is better than eating one heavy meal. Overeating also causes indigestion.

Yoga can cure indigestion and other digestive problems

  • Most asana like sarvangasana, trikonasana, and various breathing exercises are very effective and can cure indigestion from root.
  • Asana improves digestion problem, improves blood circulation, gives inner strength, and keep us physically and mentally fit. Yoga is beneficial for indigestion. Practice alternate breathing exercise, ujjaii and bashtrika pranayama everyday for healthy living.


Alternate breathing exercise method

  • Sit on floor and keep your eyes closed. Keep your index and middle finger on forehead and thumb on right nostril, inhale from left nostril, hold your breath for few seconds then release carbon dioxide or exhale from right nostril then alternatively inhale from right nostril, hold your breath for few second, and exhale from left nostril.. Repeat this alternate breathing exercise the same way for 10-15 minutes. Your indigestion problem will be cured from this exercise.
  • Do not overeat, stay stress free, and keep away the indigestion and other diseases from your life.

Home Remedies for Indigestion

Make a mixture using coriander leaf juice, cumin seeds (1 tablespoon each) then add this mixture in a glass of water, add a pinch of salt to it and shake well. Your homemade indigestion reliever solution is ready. This solution is very effective and gives instant relief. This is one of the useful home remedies for indigestion.

Mix lemon juice (1 tablespoon), curry leaf juice (1 tablespoon), and a pinch of sugar. This gives instant relief from stomach pain and cures indigestion.

Mix soya and garlic oil (one tablespoon each). Rub abdomen gently with this oil, it will give fast relief and cure indigestion.

Warm lemon water also gives relief in indigestion. Drink warm lemon water 3-4 times a day in case of indigestion and tiredness.

Make a mixture using coriander (1-2 teaspoon), ginger (1 teaspoon), clove (2-3 pieces), and cardamom (2-3 seeds). Eat this effective homemade mixture whenever you feel gas in stomach and indigestion. This is one of the best home remedies for indigestion.

You can drink herbal tea containing mint or other herbs like blackberry.

You can also drink homemade ginger tea after your regular lunch. This is effective and natural cure for indigestion.

Add 2-3 teaspoon of cinnamon in a glass of water. This solution is usually taken after an hour of lunch or dinner as it prevents indigestion or gives you relief from indigestion. This is one of the important home remedies for indigestion.

Add 1 tablespoon of baking soda in half glass of water, stir well and drink this pain reliever solution which works instantly and gives you relief from indigestion.

indigestion is also due to overeating or eating junk food. Certain physical activities like walking helps in digestion. You feel light and there is proper digestion.

In a glass of butter milk, add 2-3 teaspoon of fresh coriander juice. This is very effective in the treatment of indigestion.

Add 2-3 drops of cider vinegar in half glass of water. You can drink this natural and safe drink before one hour of your lunch as it prevents indigestion and gives instant relief. One of the useful home remedies for indigestion.

Aniseed are effective cure for indigestion, have 3-4 seeds whenever you feel indigestion.

You can take natural mint tablets with plain water whenever you feel indigestion.

Papaya helps in digestion of foods and also clears your stomach. This is very effective in the summer days for curing indigestion.

Mix one tablespoon of ajowan (ajwain) and small amount of rock salt and eat this mixture whenever you feel like indigestion.
