Hiccups

Hiccup is a condition in which ‘hic’ sound come from the opening and closing of the mucous membrane attaching to the larynx. The diaphragm that separates the chest from abdomen moves up and down to facilitate breathing. When this process is obstructed due to any reason, Hic sound starts appearing from the mouth. This is called hiccup. This condition may prevail for few minutes or may take more than a day or week. If hiccup persist for more than a day, it is alarming and may highlight a symptom of another severe disease. hiccup can also be due to fast chewing of food. In ayurveda it is known as hikka.

What Causes Hiccups

The main causes for hiccup are as diabetes, consumption of liquor, smoking, inflammation, pylosis, cancer, unconsciousness, pulling neck, chewing food in hurry, food with lots of chilly and other spice, etc.

Home Remedies for Hiccups

Hiccup though is not a severe disease but it cause lots of uneasiness if it continues for more than 2-3 minutes. There are some easy and effective home remedies for hiccups.

Sugar:

One tablespoon of sugar is the best remedy for hiccups. It is one of the most common remedies adopted all over the world. Take 1 tablespoon sugar and swallow it slowly. This is one of the useful home remedies for hiccups.

Curd with salt:

Another good home remedy for hiccup is eating half bowl of curd by adding 1-2 tablespoon of salt to it.

Adtrak (Ginger):

Eat small pieces of ginger.

Ela (Cardamom):

Take a glass of water and add half tablespoon of cardamom powder to it. Allow the mixture to boil, till water become half. Cool it a little and then drink it slowly. This sooths the irritation caused in the diaphragm and hiccup stops. This is one of the best home remedies for hiccups.

Ice:

Place ice over the diaphragm, and quickly drink ice water.

Some other remedies:

Close your ears with your fingers, and drink water directly or through straw. It has an immediate effect on treating hiccups.

Another way is to simply close your eyes and hold your breath. Wait for few seconds and then exhale. This too shows fast effect.

Cover your mouth and nose with a cloth, such that air should neither come out nor go in from them. Take a long breath after some time.

Press your eyeballs gently, while keeping mouth and ear close.

Try to avoid hiccup and do your work normally. After some time hiccup will disappear.

Similarly, try to laugh and speak louder so that the irritation in the diaphragm stays relax and hiccup stop.

Person suffering from hiccup should eat balanced diet and not any spicy or oily junk food. Some people have a myth that chewing huge bite of food during hiccup prevents it safely. This however is a myth as one of the root causes of hiccup is speed eating of food without chewing it.

Hi,
I tried all the above....after eating food generally hiccups had come to to still ...but having cardoman water after half hour again started hiccups..

This is going to sound crazy, but, the next time you get the hiccups have your partner massage your feet for a few minutes, this will work.

I had hiccups yesterday for about 30 in 3 min internval.. Stopped when i slept and started exactly 16 hrs later when i told mom that i had hiccups yesterday... No it's f((king me.
