Acidity

Acidity is related to heartburn and gas formation in stomach. In acidity, acid reflux or gastroesopohageal reflux disease, or more commonly known as urdhva gata amalpitta in ayurveda, there is a movement of gastric juices (carrying acid) from the stomach into the lower esophagus (food pipe). This is a condition which is caused when acidic contents in stomach (hydrochloric acid) move upward into the esophagus and making it dysfunctional. Understanding the right treatment at right time and causes of any disease, like acidity or acid reflux, is very helpful for effective treatments. In ayurveda it is considerd to be caused by the aggarvation of pitta dosha that is responsible for burning sensation caused in the chest region.

Acidity Causes

Gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD) or acidity is caused by various factors:

    Stomach contains various enzymes and hydrochloric acids which help in food digestion. When there is a problem in the functioning of the digestive system, it results a disease called acidity.

    Foods which are rich in fats, such as chocolates cause acidity or acid reflux diseases.

    Excessive intake of alcohol, smoking, keeping stomach empty for long time, skipping breakfast causes acidity. (Counseling by professionals and friendly peer groups, who do not smoke can help you in quitting smoking.)

    Excessive intake of caffeine also leads to acidity.

    Other causes of acidity or heartburn are pregnancy, aging, obesity, and bad eating habit, like eating junk foods Acidity leads to burning sensation in stomach and chest area.

Acidity Diet

What to eat and how much to eat is an important factor in controlling acidity:

    • Avoid eating fried, fatty, junk foods, and excessive chocolates.
    • Avoid eating onions, citrus fruits, spicy foods, as they worsen the acid reflux or acidity disease.
    • Eat carbohydrate rich food like rice, as they are easily digested and with no acid formation.
    • Eat dinner two to three hours before sleeping time as it keeps you healthy.
    • Eat small meals as it helps in digestion.
    • Maintain adequate body weight it helps in acidity control
    • Avoid eating protein-rich and calcium-rich foods like milk and diary products at night.
    • Alcohol, caffeine should be a big no in your life for healthy living and acidity control.

Acidity Symptoms

Symptoms found in children are:

  • Respiratory problems
  • inadequate weight
  • vomiting,
  • coughing,
  • turning down food

Symptoms found in adults are:

  • Long heartburn, chest and stomach pain, gas formation in stomach, inflammation in chest, gastroesophageal reflux.
  • Voice change and formation of ulcer in esophagus (tube connecting mouth and stomach), pain during muscular contractions, and pain in ears are some of the symptoms of acidity.
  • Patient with hernia are at a risk of developing acid reflux or acidity.

acidity can affect your daily activity and you face difficulty in swallowing foods.
Acidity can exceed up to several months if not treated timely.

Home Remedies for Acidity

There are various home remedies and ayurvedic treatments for acidity control; it is good to go for such treatments as they are safe and effective. Avoid chemical/medicinal acidity treatments as it creates a bundle of other health problems.

Using ayurvedic medicines that can suppress acid formation under the recommendation of healthcare professionals is very effective in treating acidity.

Ayurvedic medicines like Kamdudha Rasa plain are effective in treating acidity. Avipattikar

hurna can be taken with water before your daily meal. It is good for your bowel movement and is effective in heartburn treatment or acidity. Narikel lavan is also a good remedy to cure hyperacidity.

Home remedies that will help you in controlling acidity

  • Regular practice of in taking one to two glass of water, in early morning is healthy habit and helpful in acidity control.
  • Holy basil (tulsi) plays an important role in controlling acidity. Consuming few leaves of tulsi leaves anytime gives relief from acidity and is one of the useful home remedies for acidity..
  • Natural and effective dosages for acidity control are: Take one table spoon alma with one table spoon haritaki (chebulic myroblan)
  • Take two tablespoon honey with two tablespoon natural cidar vinegar before meal

The above mentioned dosages are effective for acidity treatment.

Amla is a natural and effective herb that helps in curing many diseases like diabetes, indigestion, heartburn. It is also helpful in heart, respiratory, and eyes disorder. Alma capsules are very effective for acidity treatment. Amla can also be taken with warm milk, pulses or vegetables. This is one of the important home remedies for acidity.

Keeping terminalia chebula (haritaki) in mouth after your regular meal gives relief from acidity.

Mint juice or mint capsules containing peppermint oil are also a good herbal remedy for treating acidity. It is recommended to be taken after meal, it reduces gas formation. This is one of the useful home remedies for acidity.

Fruits that will help you in getting relief from acidity are cucumber, watermelon, papaya, and banana.

Intake cold milk, coconut water, almonds or raw garlic, all these give you relief from acidity and heartburn.

Intake jaggery (gur) on hourly basis will give you relief from acidity.

Half glass butter milk with one table spoon of coriander juice is effective in case of stomach burns, indigestion, and acidity. This is one of the best home remedies for acidity.

Exercise helps in controlling acidity

Depression, anxiety worsens the acidity disease so try to live a stress-free life for healthy and happy living.

Morning and evening walk are good for your health and keeps the acidity disease under control. Yogic exercises and meditation keeps your overall internal system (like digestive system, nervous system) and external system in good condition.

Little changes in life style keep you healthy and happy

Sleeping in right posture and right elevation help in acidity control, like keeping head on a high pillow up to seven inches.

Try to avoid chemically prepared medicines, though they suppress the acid formation in stomach but badly affect the digestive system and has many side effects. In acute cases, right diagnosis at right time helps in treatment so consult your physician for proper medication and treatments. Simple and easy life style can keep you healthy and happy. Health is wealth, so live a balance and stress-free life. Every disease has its cure so don’t get panic and stay happy.

Very use full information, but one confusion Citric fruits like lemon are known to produce alkaline effects in body eventhough they contain citric acid and they are prescribed for acidity.
but your view on lemons or citric fruits are Contradictory,

Remove the sentence citrus fruits cause acidity... Lime is a natural antacid to human body.
Though it contains acid, it is alkalizing to body.

Why would you take honey and vinegar when they are both acid foods?
For 30 years, I have had an itching problem on my arms and for the last 15 years my toes developed calcium deposits that were very painful. Not one Dr. could come up with an answer let alone put the two together. I had read about taking a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water to get rid of acid, which I did for the calcium deposits, and the itching stopped! I drank it for the toes and the pain stopped and was shocked to see the itching stopped also. I have been drinking soda water for the last year whenever I itch or my toes hurt and it stops the pain or itch right away. In the mean time I have had the calcium deposits removed from both feet. When the podiatrist did the surgery he said the bones in both big toes were black.
I am 54 years old, eat right, exercise, but can feel the acid eating me up. The only relief I get is when I drink the soda water, which is about one or two glasses a day. Just thought this might help someone else out there if they are having the same kinds of problems.

I am suffering with acidity, I work in US shift, i was having a huge family stress one day, due to my wife's unhealthiness, i was continuously thinking for 6 hr, i was not even able to work on that, suddenly I had a problem in my breathing and pain in my heart, i went to nearest hospital, my BP has raised to 150/90 and i was injected antacid injection PAN -40, and given stress release pile as Restyle. i got under control and after 4 days of rest again while i was in the office, had the same problem, and went to hospital, again continued the same prescription, next day met cardiologist, he suggested for diagnose, ECG, 2D-Echo, TSH, Heamogram, every thing was normal except ECG few deviations were found, he told every thing is normal no heart related problem, it might be due to acidity, meet to psychiatrist, as it might be due to mental stress panic attack. I went to one of the Ayurvedic doctor, he told according to records my problem is anxiety, due to mental stress, the only treatment is to have kerla head massage for 14 days regularly, he told i don’t actually have acidity problem, actual due to mental stress, its leading to acidity and indigestion, so only Massage would be the permanent cure.

I was not able to decide any thing, i took the 2 to 3 glasses of butter milk every day, 15 days i felt it was normal, suddenly one day i felt indigestion again even when was consuming butter mild, i started walking every day morning after my shift, before going to bed, and i am sleeping empty stomach, when i woke up 2:00pm then i will have 2 chapattis and some rice and i will have my dinner at 9:30 Pm in my office, only twice daily, but still i have acidity problem, can you plz suggest what would be the permanent treatment for my problem, and I want to know whether due to acidity, there will be raise in the BP levels, as i never had increase in BP levels before this incident, is kerala's massage would be the permanent treatment, i want the exact solution for my problem, can u plz help me out.

Hi , I am 35 yrs old and have continuous pain in my throat . Have difficulty in swallowing . I usually have this kind of pain before the onset of cold . But I wasnt starting a cold either . My doctor said its acidity . I didnt believe him . but later when I took Occid it relieved me. At times I have some white deposits in mouth when I wake up . I am going thru lots of tensions . Following daily schedule helped me lot in last 1 year.

It helped me lot to recover fast. Any change in schedule has troubled me again with acid secretion and gas formation.

0. 1 cup of milk after wake up (at 6.30 a.m.)
1. Half an hour walk every morning (at 7.30 a.m.)
2. 30-45 minuets of Pranayam after morning walk.
3. Light breakfast at 9.30 a.m.
4. Lunch at 12.30 p.m.
5. Light Evening breakfast at 4.30 p.m.
6. Dinner at 7.30 p.m.
7. 15-30 minuets walk after dinner.
8. 1 Fruit at 9.30 p.m.
9. 1 cup of milk with program food before slip at 10.30 p.m. (available in selected medical shops)
10. Enough sleep (10.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m.)

Milk is the best antacid. Take it in moderately cold condition half an hour before your sleep. I tried this for 15 years and had no problems. I stopped it for a few months and I am back to acidity again. Now I am taking once again only to find it that it was the best medicine. If you are feeling that Milk can increase fat, take low fat milk. Still it will work. Good Luck.

EAting red tomato in the morning before breakfast cuts 50% of acid in your stomach. honey is an excellent remedy. though Citrus fruit are acidic in nature which may add more acid to your stomach yet in the process of digestion its alkaline and helps to control acidity but know that citrus fruit burns your stomach when taken on empty stomach
