Habitat

 

It is found at the area of sea level on the coastal areas. It is common world wide on the coastal region. In India whole peninsular region is being covered by it. Besides this it is found in Sri-Lanka, African countries and South African countries.

Morphology

 

It is a tree that is about 60 to 90 feet high. Stem is thick measuring about 1 to 2 feet. It is light brownish in color. It has a roundish scar marks on the bark and trunk. Leaves are about 8 to 20 foot in length. Leaflets are 2 to 3 feet in length having spear shape. Spadix is distinctly seen. Having female part at the lower end and male at the upper end. Fruit is ovate in shape having a triangular base. It is 10 to 15 inch in length. Its outer skin is very hard and inside it contains a fluid. It flowers in summers and fruits in late summers

Chemical Constituents

 

The freshly derived fruit contains fleshy substance, fatty acids, lignin, alkaloids and certain non organic substances. The mild derived from the fruit contains glucose, sticky substance, albumin, tartaric acid, certain minerals and water. Ash of the leaves contains potassium. Oil contsins lauric, miristic, palmitic and stireic acids and besides these it contains caprilic acid. Ripe fruit contains about 60 to 71 % of oil.

Pharmacology

 

It suppresses vata and pitta. It enhances the growth of hairs. It suppresses the burning sensation in the body and helps to maintain the normal body temperature. It promotes healing of wounds. Good results have also been seen on skin related ailments. It also decreases the intensity of pain. It also helps in binding the tissues together. It prevents hemorrhages and epitasis. It also acts as diuretic hence is helpful in elimination of toxins in the body. It is also an aphrodisiac and helps in regularizing menses. It also provides strength to the body.

According to ayurveda it contains

  • Gunna (properties) – guru (heavy), snigdh (slimy)
  • Rasa (taste) – madhur (sweet)
  • Virya (potency) - sheet (cold)

Uses

 
  • Water - it is used in local application in small pox to avoid the burning sensation also it helps in avoiding the spots left after it. It is also effective on the skin disorders. It is good way to avoid dehydration. It also relives from hyperacidity. It is very much effective in ulcers especially gastric ones. It also reduces the inflammation caused in the gastro intestinal tract. It is also effective in cases of diarrhea and dysentery.

  • Oil- oil is used in nourishing hairs and helps in increasing the length of the hairs. It is also used in applying on the burned skin and relieving from the pain caused in burning. It helps preventing the skin disorders.

  • Fruit – It is used as aphrodisiac agent and also controlling the menstrual disorders. It also helps in avoiding the general body weakness.
