It is found in the south western part of the India along the coast line and in Sri Lanka till the height of 35000 feet. It’s found in China, Japan, and also in European countries. According to ayurveda three varieties are seen. These are (a) Chinese, (b) Indian and (c) Sinhali or Sri Lankan.

Morphology |

It is a tropical tree that attains a height of 20 to 25 feet and sometimes even 60 feet. It is evergreen tree. Leaves are oblong and about 3 to 6 inches in length. The dorsal surface is shiny and ventral surface is green. The dorsal surface has 3 to 5 veins, having strong odor. Its taste is pungent. Flowers are in bunch and are strongly aromatous. Fruit is about ½ to 1 inch in length, oval shaped, dark purplish in color having a seed inside it. When this fruit is crushed there is a peculiar odor that comes out of it. Bark of new or young trees is smooth and pale where as bark of old trees is rough and brownish and is brittle. The bark is about 5 millimeters in thickness.

The bark contains oil which is about ½ to 1 % that has cinnamaldehyde 50 to 65 % and eugenol 60 to 75 %. When freshly derived it is of yellow color but changes to red when kept for long time. Its leaves also contain strong odorous oil that is very similar to that of a clove i.e. uginol 70 to 85 %.the bark of the root contains transparent oil having similar smell like that of camphor. Seeds contain about 33 % of the stable oil. It also possess a acid known as sinemic acid that has a very major role to play in the body.
