Posology & Bhaishajiya Kalpana - II" "Calculation of doses as per age"

SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

As we know that the dosage determination and fixing is scientific and have utmost importance in modern pharmacological studies and practices. Modern posology is dependent upon various factors. A very clear prospective view is taken about the following factors in modern science before deciding dose of medicine: -

  • Individual resistance and Incompatibilities (any patient is allergic or sensitive for a specific class of drug or specific drug)
  • Acquired and habitual adaptation.
  • Assimilation and excretion of the administrated medicine as well as bodily discharges stool, urine, swat.
  • Mental conditions of the patient.
  • Country & habitat of the patient and his/her dwelling place.
  • Medicament used for the purpose of administrating drug / medicine.
  • Age / Sex criterion.
  • Temperament.

All the above factors are taken in consideration before dose determination, are very similar to those stated 3000 years back by Ancient Indian Medicos i.e. creator of Ayurveda.

As stated in Ayurveda text “Prakriti” is much resembling with the modern temperament of patient / individual like as –

  • Phlegmatic temperament – Kaphaj prakruti,
  • Sengine temperament – Raktaja prakruti
  • Bilious temperament – Pittaj prakruti
  • Nervous temperament – Vataja prakruti

The tolerance can be taken as in considering satwa and satamaya (Adaptation).

The country region, season & climate are well understood as “Desha Kalam”.

This way the posology very much resembles the matara vigyan or doses in Ayurveda text and also studied on scientific parameters.

All the dosha, dushaya can be taken in consideration under the strength of disease i.e. Acute or chronic disease and its involvement in the physiological process.

The most scientific aspect of posology in Ayurveda is found in the first drug manual type text Sharangdhar Samhita. The next article is clearly describing the modern aspect of dose calculation and sharangdhar's formula for dose determination.
