| In the
Sharangdhar Samhita there is a concept of setting
the threshold of effectiveness limitation of the
Kalpana. From modern point of view it can be termed
as expiree limitation of the drugs. In modern times the expiree limitations of the various
ayurvedic medicines have risen as at the time of Sharangdhar, there were not
much knowledge of storage and preservation methods. In modern
medicines, the expiree date of all drugs is maximum
to three years from the date of manufacturing. In ayurveda some preparations are the more effective
as they become old. The basic expiry limitation of various
Kalpana in ayurveda can be classified as under-
- Instantly usable –phant, upnaah
and Basti
- 1 day-kalaka,takra, ksheerpaak, quath, anna, paanak, peya, dadhikurchika, udak, lepa, udak, mand, vilepi, maans, maansarasa, yavagu, yusah, manth
and khad
- 1 month-khand, malahar and saktu
- 2 months- Manjan and choorna
- 6-momnth-sharkara, amlasandhan
and dhoopan
- 1 year- anjana, arka, kshaara, tailmasi, vatak
and vati
All the organo-mineral preparations
like asava, aristha, bhasma and parpati are said to
have more efficacy as they become older. Nowadays the expiry limitation of the medicines
have changed due to preservative methods have
become more advanced these days .So the expiry limitations of those medicines falling in the category of 2 to 6 months can be extended to 1 year.
Similarly the drops are very well preserved thus they can be used for more than one day i.e. 15 days from opening the container.
This is how the advancement techniques has imparted its benefits to the
Bhaishajiya Kalpana (ayurvedic pharmacy).
