Bhaishajiya Kalpana & 'Rasashastra' developmental aspects

Bhaishajiya Kalpana as mentioned in the Brihatta tryee till Chukradutta is mainly based upon the single drug therapy and pathaya Kalpana. As seen in Ashtaang samgraha and Ashtaang Hridyam another side of complex combination of drugs minerals were gradually coming into practice. The bhasma Kalpana clearly indicates it. The very first appearance of minerals in the drug manual is parad sanskaars elaborated in sharangdhar Samhita. But prior to this the scattered references are seen in Chukradutta and Bhavaprakash.

To clearly understand the effect of Rasashastra on Bhaishajiya Kalpana we must agree upon the development of mineral processing for prepared medicaments. This historical aspect of Rasashastra is almost parallel to that of the ayurveda but its development was rapid after Lord Buddha and the influence of the philosophy of ahimsa as Charka and Susruta methodology for treatment was ruled out on the basis of "ahimsa". This was the era when Rasashastra flourished tremendously. The surgery gradually got diminished. The basic ideology of Rasashastra was based upon the metallurgical process of ancient India. The Rasashastra is based upon the mercury, sulphur and mineral processing. The concept behind this was to make herbs and medicines more sustainable and to increase the efficacy. The herbo-mineral complex was prepared to provide the vigor and strength of the body.

As said in praise of mercury and its preparation that it makes one almost immortal. Therefore unfulfilled desire of being immortal in the world could be one of the driving forces for preparation of herbo-mineral complexes.

However the most unique system of Ayurveda in Rasashastra as it has used the minerals for parental therapy a thousand years back.

From modern point of view avoiding the mercuric concept, the use of bhasma and other herbo-mineral complex is very subject of research.

The durability of preparation added by Rasashastra finally ruled out the very basics of pathaya Kalpana. Nowadays the dal, Chawal, bhaat, poori, are used in Indian cuisine which were a part of Bhaishajiya Kalpana at time of Charka till Sharangdhar. Rasashastra also increase the storage and preservation tradition in opposite to that of using single drug therapy for fresh preparation.
