The Spectacular Lake Powell on Colorado River, USA

 

lake-powellLake Powell is a man-made reservoir, which was constructed in 60’s as a part of the Glen Canyon Dam, Arizona. This famous lake lies in the border of two states of USA, Utah and Arizona. Today the lake has become a major attraction for the travelers of Grand Canyon. The contrast of crystal-clear turquoise water with rich-red canyon walls has created a splendid vibrant effect to the landscape. The lake is scattered around several magnificent sandstone arches, butts and spires. There are plenty of secluded coves and beaches on the bank of the lake. Many part of the lake is navigable only through boat.

The best way to enjoy the dramatic setting of the lake and the surroundings is to stay in the houseboat. You will get a wide range of choices to select according to your budget. You can also have the freedom to dock at any point on the lake and to enjoy a special outing under the starry sky or in a remote cove on the bank of the lake. However, there are plenty of options for accommodation on the land.

As the lake covers a wide span of area, it provides the access to many interesting geographical and indigenous cultural features of the area. One of them is the Rainbow Bridge National Monument, which is a natural bridge of 88 meter high. This amazing geological formation in sandstone was formed naturally during the Jurassic age. It is also a sacred place to the local Indian people. Another interesting natural site is Goosenecks State Park, which overlooks the steep bends and deep canyons of the San Juan River. The Glen Canyon Dam and the Hite Crossing Bridge – both these spots are worth visiting.

Although various types of water sports including water-skiing, kayaking, wakeboarding etc are the main activities on the lake, enthusiasts can take part in hiking or mountain biking. Camping on a secluded spot is another thrilling activity to enjoy. You can also explore the area riding on horseback or can choose to go for guided fishing excursions on the lake.
