Located in the Eastern Caribbean region, Barbuda is a small sister island of Antigua. This small island is surrounded by Atlantic Ocean, on one side and Caribbean Sea, on the other. The shoreline with the Atlantic Ocean has some wild beaches, whereas the shoreline with the Caribbean Sea has a long stretch of white and pink sandy beaches. Still today the island is mostly unspoiled, as it is not that popular destination among the tourists of Caribbean.
The majority portion of the island has flat, rocky formation. It is a favorite place for various wild animals including dear, boar, land turtles, wild cat, guinea fowl etc. It is also famous for the frigate birds during the season. There are also many caves on this island to explore.
Evidences of ancient settlement from 2400 BC have been found in this island. Christopher Columbus also stepped in here during 15th century, when it was inhabited by aboriginal people.
Codrington is the main village of this island, where most of the people live. Life has its own pace at this small tranquil village. Here you do not have to compete with time.
The Codrington Lagoon is a favorite place for bird watchers. You can see thousands and thousands of frigate birds in this place.
The Two Foot Bay is also another tourist attraction of the island. Long time ago, this region was filled with water.
You can explore the caves on the eastern part of the island, to find drawings on the cave wall by ancient people. After entering the cave, you may reach to the highest point of the Highlands. From here can enjoy spectacular scenery of the surroundings including the coral reef, can be enjoyed.
Experienced divers can take a plunge into water to explore underwater caves. In past days, the island was infamous as a ship wreckage area. Around 200 shipwrecks have been discovered under the water. If you are interested, you can take a peek to any of them. However, you must take an expert guide with you.
Otherwise you can take part in activities like sailing, boating, swimming, 4X4 ride, horse ride etc.
