Slovakia is a country which has abundant castles to explore and see how the kings use to spend their life. Castles are palaces which we have read about or seen in picture books and fairytales. These castles were meant to defend the army against invaders and outside enemy. The kings built castles to show other kings about their wealth and status. Some of Slovakia’s best castles worth sightseeing are as follows:
Bojnice Castle
This is a luxurious castle in its way. It has a zoo, health spa and large grounds. It is an old castle and has many artefact s from ancient history at display.
Bratislava Castle
This is the oldest castle in Slovakia dated 9th century. It has a basilica in the lawn. A number of kings have owned it and have renovated it in their own style. It is in the shape of an upside down table with four towers in four corners. There was a fire in 1811 which left the castle abandoned. It was renovated in 1905 and now is the main government building with other places to see as well. It has a museum and is also the venue for special events in the city of Bratislava.
Cachtice
This castle has a gruesome story behind it. It was home to a Dracula kind of countess. She used to slaughter her servants one by one. There are documents which prove these facts and it has become a famous story to tell tourists as well. It is in ruins now.
Cerveny Kamen
This castle was built by the aristocrat Thurzo family however while building it as a home for them self, they ran out of money and had to sell it to another aristocrat family. There was a rebel later on and this castle was demolished. It was restored later on partly and has exhibitions on furniture and furnishings in its various rooms nowadays.
There are many more castles which can be explored by tourists visiting Slovakia. Castles like the Devin, Krasna Horka, Pajstun, Trencin and Spis Castle. A traveller interested in history and beautifully built structures from the past should definitely visit Slovakia.
