The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is a place where every tourist will love to go to see the majestic mountains, sandy desserts, the lovely Dead Sea and its wonderful cities. You can get a great view of migrating birds or take a mud bath in the Dead Sea. The cities which you can visit are Petra, Amman, Wadi Rum and Jerash. One such important city is Petra. It is scenic place and a must visit.
Petra is a famous tourist attraction and has the majestic red mountains. The city looks red in color with the color of the soil being red. It is a city where trade was established by the Arabs. It was the passageway for traders going to China, Middle East and India. You can enter the city through a narrow gorge called the Siq. It has cliffs on both sides and is one of the most attractive places to be seen in Petra. There are different rock formations in the 1 km long Siq. When you come out of it you can see the Al- Khazneh or the Treasury.
The Treasury is carved out of pink rock in the 1st century and depicts the architectural qualities of the people living in those times. It is a tomb of an important king belonging to the Nabataean dynasty. It is 30m wide and 43 m high. The history is so intense and rich that a visitor who wishes to see the whole of Petra thoroughly will have to spend a lot of days here studying. Petra is in a valley and has a lot of natural beauty to it as well. There are a lot of tombs built which haunt the place and give you an eerie feeling.
There is a Roman style theatre which can be visited and a lot of small temples. There are two museums which talk of the rich history, The Petra Archaeological Museum and the Petra Nabataean Museum. No motorized vehicles are allowed in the valley so you can hire a horse cart. The best time to see the lovely city of Petra is in the mid mornings or late afternoons, when the sunlight is correct to see all the natural colors of the city.
