Best Beaches of Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is an island country surrounded by Indian Ocean and located near the southern tip of India. The island has a wide natural diversity to satisfy different types of nature-lovers. People who prefer the sand, sea and sun can enjoy the pristine beaches of the country.
Mt Lavinia
Just 12 km away from Colombo, it is one of the closest beach resorts. The white sand and tranquil waves have made this place popular to the tourists. The place is related to legendary stories of the then Governor General of Ceylon, during early 19th century. The Governor House is a place of interest which has been converted to a famous resort.
Negombo
Negombo is located at the mouth of Negombo lagoon at a distance of just 37km from the capital city. It is also famous as a traditional fishing town. Other than the fishing trips, you can also enjoy diving and snorkeling for discovering the coral reefs, a 50 year old shipwreck and plenty of tropical fishes.
Beruwala
Take an hour drive to reach this pristine destination, which is located at 58km south of Colombo. This beach is simply ideal for bathing through out the year. It is actually the gateway of the 130 km long South Coast beach resort. This place is also known for the first Muslim settlement of the country. The oldest mosque of the country is situated here. A few minutes drive will take you to another beautiful beach, Bentota, which is located at the mouth of the Bentota River.
Ambalangoda
A few kilometers away from Bentota, this place has something more than sea. Other than the white sandy beach, this place also has a cultural importance for the traditional devil dancing and mask making. It is also famous for the batik works on hand-woven cotton materials.
Hikkaduwa
Being located at 20km north-west of Galle, it is a great beach for the travelers who enjoy exciting water-sports like board-surfing, diving or snorkeling. The only marine sanctuary of the country is located here, which features vibrant corals and exotic marine life.
Unawatuna
This beach has been declared as one of the 12 best beaches in the world. The beautiful golden beach is surrounded by spectacular lush green nature with palm and coconut trees. This famous beach has its place even in the epic Ramayana.
