Your Boy is Turning to a Man

boy1For the first time when you listen to your son’s cracked voice, you might as well think it as a problem of sore throat. But this may not be simple cold which has caused the voice to be broken. Rather it might be the puberty and your little son is going to step ahead to adulthood as a man. Usually this transformation occurs for boys between the ages 11 to 15. However, there are exceptions, when a boy might go through this phase of growth little early or late.

Actually it is the larynx which gets changed during the adolescent period. The size of the larynx increases to be larger and thicker. In fact it happens both for boys and girls, but for girls usually there is no major voice change related to this. You can notice a bit of change in your girl’s voice, but that is not at all significant. However, for boys the voice starts to get broken which gradually changes to a sound of much deeper voice of a man. Normally it takes couple of months to complete the change of voice.

As the larynx grows bigger, a part of it pushes towards outside at the frontal portion of the throat. This raised part over the throat is known as Adam’s apple. This also occurs for a girl, but since the change is not that significant, you will not be able to notice it prominently from outside.

There is nothing to worry about this squeaking voice of your son. Rather he is absolutely normal and going through natural changes in his body. During this time sometimes he might find it difficult to speak out, as he is still not used to the grown up larynx. But give him few months time to adjust with this new situation in his life and after that he can easily control and talk with his new voice. Initially he might find embarrassed with this voice change. But you should make him understand that there is nothing abnormal about it and within a few months time he is going to sound like a grown up man.
