Signs of Premature Labor

 

premature-pregnancyPremature labor is quite serious complication. Labor that begins at less than 37 weeks of pregnancy is defined as pre-term labor. There are several symptoms to a premature labor and very few women especially first time mothers know when they are faced with these symptoms. Being able to determine at the onset of the symptoms could save you and your baby.

If you suddenly start experiencing contractions that are in the range of five in an hour, then get yourself to your doctor. Get medical help if you see bright red vaginal bleeding. A sudden gush of clear fluid from your vagina, accompanied by dull but continuous back ache and very strong pelvic pressure means you could be going into pre-term labor. Get yourself to a hospital.

If you suddenly experience the urge to decorate your baby’s room or clean the house, this is known as the nesting syndrome. This could be the onset of labor pains. Do not give in to the urges and strain yourself. Braxton Hicks contractions are another thing to look out for. These are ‘practice’ contractions that increase in intensity as you labor approaches.

Pre-term labor cannot really be prevented from happening; there are some cases where precautions can work with some simple steps. There is a chance of you going into pre-term labor during the summer. If you are experiencing contractions, drink a lot of water. Dehydration causes oxytocin in your blood to kickstart contraction. Water prevents this from happening.

In terms of managing pre-term labor, there are a few things that you can do, however these are dependent on several other factors related to your medical condition at that time. Staying hydrated is most important. Depending on your risk levels you will be on bed rest or at home and be asked to lie on your left. You will also be given medication to prevent labor. Your baby will be constantly monitored for distress. Your baby will be given medication to speed up the growth of its lungs if premature labor is absolute.

As a first time mother it would be best to prevent a pre-mature birth with early detection and prevention. The best would be to sit with your doctor and have detailed discussion on the symptoms of pre-mature labor that you need to keep in mind.
