Pregnancy constipation

constipation1Many of us may have experienced constipation occasionally. For women who are pregnant this can be more pronounced. Difficulty in clearing your bowels or not being able to clear them at all for a few days is constipation. This can start at the beginning of your pregnancy and sometimes last for the duration.

Constipation can be blamed on hormonal changes as well as the body losing its water content. In the first trimester, hormone progesterone slows down intestinal movement. Constipation also happens because your uterus begins to press down on your rectum as you grow bigger prevent smooth passage of effluents. Iron supplements that are prescribed to your can also cause constipation. If you have suffered from constipation before your pregnancy, it is likely to continue during as well.

While it is not something that requires medical attention, a prolonged bout will need a doctor’s opinion. Ignoring constipation for too long can also result in hemorrhoids or piles which are unnecessary painful afflictions during a pregnancy.

If you have never been constipated before, here are some tell tale signs. Not being able to empty your bowels for long periods are a sign of constipation. You will feel uneasy, bloated and suffer from excessive flatulence. When you are able to have a bowel movement, you will find it hard and painful to expel it. Also if you find spots of blood in your stools, you know you are constipated.

What you can do to try and avoid constipation is to drink at least 8 glasses of warm water a day. This of course is provided you don’t feel nauseated. Satiate your thirst with fruit juices and include a lot of dry fruits in your diet. Give yourself plenty of time to relax and indulge in some simple exercises and walking. Include a lot of fiber in your diet in the form of fruits, vegetables and cereals. If you are generally used to having a low-fiber diet then up your intake slowly. A sudden increase in fiber can throw your body out of gear and cause further problems. A glass of warm lime water and honey in the morning encourages a good bowel movement.

Stay away from processed and pre-cooked food. Eat what is light and freshly prepared. Reduce your intake of caffeine and aerated drinks as well as junk food. Stay from refined foods such as white bread. Opt for healthier alternatives. Never take any laxatives without an okay from your doctor. You could be doing more harm than good.

You can ease constipation with a basically good health care regime. Too much of discomfort will mean a visit to your doctor for some medical advice.
