Known as the Turkish cat in Britain, the Van cat has its name driven from the Lake Van, as it was originated in the Lake Van area of Southeastern Turkey.
They have been kept as pets since a long time. Also known as Turkish Swimming Cat because of its ability to swim, it loves water. Turkish Van Cat is a recognized breed.
Physical Appearance: They are distinctive because of their unique colour. They usually have a white body with a different colour head and tail. It is large bread and is also very strong. Their expressive eyes and large ears make them look elegant. They have a broad chest and elongated body. They weigh between 3 Kgs to 8 Kgs. Their soft and silky coat makes them look more graceful.
They live up to 15 years and their average number of litters goes up to five.
Temperament: Van Cats are extremely friendly and have a very soft voice, making them lovable. Excellent for being a companion, they are also very intelligent. They love playing games, especially those related to water. They are usually good with children and their behaviour with other animals is also good.
Diet and Care: As they are an active breed, their diet needs to be proper and according to their body weight. Overfeeding should be avoided.
It usually has a healthy life and not prone to diseases, though precautionary health check needs to be done.
They also require regular bathing and grooming. As their hair tends to detangle, it needs to be carefully brushed on a regular basis. Unlike other cats, they love water and thus bathing them becomes easier.
They are wonderful cats and great companions. They are extremely vigorous and love running and playing. One needs to give them time and affection.
They are very good as pets and can be kept at any kind of home, big or small. They are not noisy and create no problem for the owners.
