During the initial weeks of a kitten’s life, the concerns of utmost importance are feeding, development of social skills of the kitten, keeping the kittens warm and making the kittens learn how to excrete independently. In most of the cases, the mother cats will tech all these things to the kittens by itself. But if the kitten is to your care than you have got a tough job in hand and the job is of utmost responsibility. Most of the time, kittens are rejected by the cat if the mother kitten cannot produce enough milk.
First thing you should do is look for a foster mother for your kittens. If you cannot do so, then it is advisable to consult a veterinary to learn proper way of bottle feeding to kittens. The feed should only be a commercial milk replacer. Never ever offer regular cow milk to kittens. As the kitten becomes 3 – 4 weeks old, try offering replacer milk in a shallow bowl. After that the next step is to try and introduce them to moist and chewable food. You can either make gruel from warm milk replacer or try canned food for kittens. You can also try dry food of high quality. You should serve any kind of these food items in a shallow bowl only and do it several times in a single day.
Kittens require large amount of energy. Quite surprisingly the energy requirements of a kitten are 3-4 times that of an adult cat. And not just that, about 30 per cent of the total energy produced in their body should come from proteins.
If the kitten has been orphaned, then it is essential to provide them the essential warmth. A hot water bottle or a heating pad that is wrapped in a towel can work well. You should consult a veteran about the ideal temperatures. It is important for you to monitor the weight of a newborn kitten from time to time. Average birth weight of a kitten is 3 ½ ounces. Also make sure that you do not over handle the kitten, especially during the first week. Kittens are prone to injuries. After the kitten becomes four weeks old you can also start to potty train the kitty.
