silver-tip-tetraThe silvertip Tetra is a good community fish and can live in soft waters. They like to live in groups of six or more of the same species. You can add live plants, rocks and driftwood to provide a natural environment and natural hiding spaces. Silvertip tetras are usually from South America, Central America and Africa.

Tetras live happily in heavily oxygenated waters especially aquariums which are densely planted. This species thrive in clean and highly aerated waters. Please avoid extremely acidic water and waters which are very hard in nature. They can live in a range of water conditions. However, you should provide plenty of plant cover to keep these fishes happy. The tetras will not display their true colors if they feel stressed or feel uncomfortable in the surroundings.

The tetras live happily when they have plenty of room to swim and are kept in numbers of four or more. If they are kept alone, their colors might fade or they might become overtly aggressive. The silvertips’ are peaceful with other fishes and they are not known to be fin nippers. They should be kept with fishes of similar or smaller size. Large fishes like Gourami,Angels and Silverdollars should be avoided. These fishes like to live in planted aquariums and they might nibble on the plants a little bit. These fishes are middle level swimmers but they do come to the top level to feed.

Silvertip Tetras can breed in home aquariums and during this period the belly of the females look fuller than the males. Slightly acidic water is best for inducing breeding. The breeding tank should have dim lighting and a temperature of 26C is ideal. The tank should be very clean during this process and you can use very fine leaves to scoop up the eggs. Or else after the eggs hatch, waste no time in separating the parents from the fry. The eggs take a maximum of 14 days to hatch. During this breeding time, frequent water changes are essential and frequent feeding should also be maintained.
