Mudpuppy : the largest amongst the salamanders

MudpuppyThe Mudpuppy is one of the largest salamander and they have gained popularity around the world for the weird vocalization feature that it has. The amphibian is also called the Water Dog because of its squeaky dog-like bark. In some parts of the world it is incorrectly believed that Mudpuppies are extremely poisonous creatures in fact, they are nothing more than slimy amphibians. Mudpuppies are bottom dwellers. This means that they spend their entire life in water. This is quite a distinctive quality that this salamander has.

Mudpuppies are usually found in large streams and permanent lakes. Their habitats vary from clear water lakes to weed-choked small aquatic environments. Mudpuppies are generally active throughout the year. An interesting fact about these salamanders is that they are active all day in muddy water and they behave like nocturnal creatures in clear water habitats.

Another interesting fact about Mudpuppies is that they never leave water. In fact they incorporate the surroundings in a way that will be used by them to hide themselves. Most of the time, the Mudpuppies are found hiding under a big rock or between the thick vegetation inside water. They generally emerge during the night time to feed on worms, crayfish and other small fishes.

Being amongst the largest salamanders, the mudpuppies are about 11 inches in length and they can exceed up to 16 inches in length. These interesting creatures can be found in different places including southern central Canada and Midwestern United States. Their easily distinguishable features include their gray to brownish colored bodies that has black or blue spots all over tem. They have red colored bushy external gills. They have these from larva stage and it remains there for life time. An average life time period of this amphibian is about 11 years. They are also recognized by the wide and stubby tails that they have. They also have flat heads and little legs. They are extremely slimy and not very much liked as pets.

Mudpuppies are harmless creatures and an important part of natural ecosystem and heritage. These creatures can be helped and protected by preserving their natural habitat.
