irish-wolfhoundWolfhounds are famous as tallest hounds of the world. This dog was basically a hunting dog but it served well as a guardian also. Because of a huge body and muscular built, the dog is considered harsh and cruel. But in reality, the dogs are very gentle and soft. The dog is very generous, patient, thoughtful and sweet tempered. The dog is also known for its intelligence. The wolfhound bonds very well with children and other pets. These dogs get fierce only when you knowingly provoke them.

This breed was originally used as a war dogs. They were also used for hunting pigs and wolfs. After few years their work field was changed. They were started being employed as watch dogs, for protecting stocks and also for securing homes. They had an advantage over others because of their speed, size and intelligence.

The extremely large size of the hound makes it different from the other dogs. If it stands on its hind legs the dog can easily reach a height of 7 feet. They generally have a shaggy and rough coat. They are mostly available in gray, brindle, red, black and white colors. Wolfhounds have round and large paws. The toes are strong and arched. The nails are also curved. Irish hound have a long head and semi pointed muzzle. The muscles of cheek are arched, the chest is deep, the eyebrows are wiry and bushy and the abdomen is well retracted. All these features make the hound look massive but at the same time it has a lot of grace.

Looks and nature of the Irish hound are absolutely dissimilar. In contrast to their appearance, they are sweet tempered, generous, thoughtful and patient. The breed can also be clumsy at times. They grow and mature slowly but they need a lot of food while they are growing up. They also need good exercise and a lot of space. As a pet they need to be treated with positive reinforcements, sympathetic training works and encouraging attitude. You also need to teach your dog not to pull the leash before he gets big and strong. In this way they can become the most loyal pets.
