The type of housing for your white mice will depend a lot on the proposed location of the cage. The housing usually comes in two materials – wire or glass.Though you will be tempted to go for the wire cage, let me point out that there are some areas in which the glass cage scores over its wire counterpart. The space in glass enclosures is much more and it also protects the rat from any preying cats. The rat’s tail too will not protrude from the spacing in the wires.

If you have a pregnant rat or if they are intent on breeding then the glass cages are a good choice. The babies are safer as they don’t get stuck between the cage bars. If you zero in on glass ones then make sure that it is well-ventilated and well secured.

The glass rat cages are not without disadvantages. There is a tendency of building up of ammonia due to the waste disposal. If not cleaned regularly, then the cages can show signs of dampness too. The glass cage will also be heavy as keeping two mice will require a glass cage with a capacity of around 100 liters.

Keeping this in mind the wire cages are the best option for pet rat owners. Go for plain stainless steel wires as the colored wires may contain certain harmful chemicals. Another good thing about wire cages is that there is proper ventilation and maximum space is available to your pets. It is also easy to fix accessories to wire cages than in glass ones. But the spacing between the wires should be such that its head cannot go through because if the head goes through then the whole body will also pass. Don’t put any kind of wood inside the cages as they have gnawing habit. Just make sure to keep your rats always happy!
