Geckos are harmless lizards that belong to the family of Gekkonidae. They can be easily seen on all continents except Antarctica. This is because Antarctica is not warm enough to support the cold blooded bodies of these lizards. To everybody’s surprise there are more than 1,000 types of geckos. Geckos are aboriginal to warm climates throughout the world.

Geckos are quite unusual as they do not have any eyelids. Very interestingly they keep licking the thin membranes over the eyes in order to clean them. In most of the tropical regions Geckos are common house guests. They could be commonly seen at the ceiling and walls of the house. In fact, they help by controlling presence of insects pests at homes.

Geckos are available in varied sizes. An adult Dwarf gecko is about three-fourth of an inch, whereas a Tokay gecko is about 14 inches in length. Geckos are only lizards that can create vocal sounds other than hissing sound. Other than hissing, geckos can chirps and squeak to communicate.

Geckos are parthenogenic. This means that the female Geckos can reproduce without mating with the male. The toes of the Geckos can bend in opposite direction of toes and human fingers. The toes look as if they are double-jointed. The footpads of Geckos have tiny setae that have hair like structure. This gives them special ability to creep on walls and cling on to the ceilings. Teflon is the only surface over which a gecko cannot cling.

Geckos are one of the safest and most popular reptiles that can be kept as a pet. They prove to be good pets, especially for beginners. They are very docile and can also be easily tamed. A leopard gecko is the first choice for a reptile to be kept as a pet. Other species popular as pet are house Geckos and Crested Geckos.

Geckos are available in a large numbers of colors and patterns. Some species are even able to change their color. They can easily blend and Camouflage with surroundings. Some Geckos also change color with temperature changes. They are wonderful and easy to care pets.
