Cushing’s disease in Pets
Cushing’s disease: There are various types of problems and disorders that cats and dogs are prone to. Cushing’s disease is one such problem that is found in the cats in large numbers. Actually a metabolic disorder, this particular disease happens due to the malfunction of the adrenal glands which produces the most vital hormone named cortisol. This metabolic disorder is named “Cushing” according to the name of the neurosurgeon that first discovered this disease.
The adrenal gland produces one of the essential body hormones that keep the cat fine. During this disease the ‘glucocorticoids’ is overproduced by the glands and it makes the normal level of cortisol high in the body and it makes the animals sick. This particular gland that is concerned here is found above the kidneys. The proper functioning of these glands is necessary for the pet’s good health. This disease is found more in digs than the cats. There are three types of this disease: Pituitary, adrenal and latrogenic. Tumor growth in pituitary or adrenal can lead to this disease.
Cushing’s disease in the cats: loss of hair, thin and fragile skin, skin pigments are common symptoms of this disease in the cats. Even you can notice hard lumps on the skin if the disease is not treated at an early stage. Other symptoms of this disease in the cats are; excessive thirst and hunger, lethargy, pot belly, enlarged lever, several ties urination, lethargy in any kind of physical activities etc.
Dogs: Dogs are more prone to this disease than the cats. The symptoms are generally same.
Treatment: It is best to take your pet to a vet for proper treatment. There are some medicines that are suggested for this disease: Lysodren, Nizoral, Trilostane etc. Surgery is suggested when the medicines fail to work. During the medication the level of cortisol is tried to reduce. Sometimes herbal treatments are also suggested for the treatment.
