Chimpanzees – Closest living human relative

chimpChimpanzees are the closest living relative of man and quite amazingly they share more than 98 percent of human beings genetic blueprint. chimpanzees are considered as one of the most intelligent animals throughout the world. Their actions and nature have deep similarities with human behavior. Chimpanzees should not at all be compared with gorillas and monkey. They are cute animals and have always attracted people’s attention. They are noisy and curious by nature.

Chimpanzees usually reside in communities that comprise of a minimum of dozen and they can easily habituate themselves to live in rainforests, grasslands and woodlands. Although they normally walk on all four legs, they can easily stand and effortlessly walk upright. They can also move by swinging from branch to branch. They move quite resourcefully in the trees. They do their most of the eating here only.

They make a nice bed of leaves and use it while they sleep on trees. Chimpanzees mostly like to eat plants and fruits. They may also have eggs, insects, meat and even carrion.

Chimpanzees are highly intelligent and few of those animals that employ tools. The use sticks that they have themselves shaped for digging grubs out of log and also to retrieve insects. They also use stones to open hard enclosure of nuts by smashing them. Using leaves as sponge so as to soak water is another example. Chimpanzees can also be taught to use various signs language that we, the humans use.

Chimpanzees belong to the category of apes and have a stocky structure. They have short legs, long arms and absence of tail. The long black hair that these creatures cover their entire body except the face, fingers, ears and toes. They have a strong grip with human like fingers and hands and therefore pick up objects just like us. Chimpanzees are very social creatures and they communicate with each other in a very warm manner. They even hug and kiss and show various other emotions. They also show anger at times.

These beautiful creatures of nature have greatlely suffered due to habitat destruction and bush meat hunters. It is a shame, but today they stand as endangered creatures.
