Breeding of Chinchilla
Chinchilla breeding is very tough and requires experienced hands. There is a step by step procedure to introduce a mate for a single chinchilla. The new chinchilla cage should be placed beside your pet one and try to observe their reaction. You can even allow the two chinchillas to play with each other. If there is no animosity between them then you can place the new chinchilla in a small cage and place them inside the cage of the old chinchilla. Observe their reactions and watch out for any hostility. If there is none then slowly open the cage and let the new chinchilla mix with the other one. Leave both the chinchillas in the same cage and keep them under observation.
Chinchillas breeds thrice a year. The female gives birth to 1-2 babies per litter. The female tends to be more aggressive than the males so you need to keep an eye on them so that they do not nip off any of the male parts. You should always choose a female chinchilla which has a fairly large pelvis in order to avoid difficulties during birth.
The gestation period of a chinchilla is around 4 months. Usually there are no problems during pregnancy but a keen observation is necessary during the pregnancy period to avoid any complications.
The new born chinchilla is very small weighing around 2.5 oz. You need to help the mother to dry the babies. If the birth of the 2nd child is too close then you need to do a lot in drying the first baby. Secondly, if the mother is not producing enough milk then you need to supplement the baby with proper food.
You need to monitor the development of the baby chinchilla from time to time to ensure that it is a healthy baby. You also need to keep track of the weight of the baby chinchilla on a weekly basis. There should be a general weight gain and by the time the baby is around 3 months old you need to separate the baby from the mother. You should monitor the number of pellets that you give to the young and also provide good quality hay to the young.
