basenjiThe Basenji is an energetic, curious, affectionate, alert and a loveable dog. The only prerequisite for keeping this dog as pet is having a lot of patience and the fact that the dog is handled regularly with care since an early age. The pet is known for its intelligence. However, the dog generally remains reserved with outsiders. The dog likes to remain aloof but at the same time it forms unbreakable bonds with people.

The Basenji is not one dog that can be trusted with non canine pets. It is recommended to not leave any small children alone with this dog. It is extremely hateful for the dog to stay in moist weather. This is one dog that you have to watch out for because this breed of dog likes to climb fences. The dog is extremely clever and posses a unique quality of not barking. It takes out a different kind of low frequency ululation instead. The dog also likes to clean itself just like a cat. The words frisky, speedy, tireless, playful and teasing its owner to play aptly describes the Basenji dog.

Basenji dogs have muscular and smooth looks. They have wrinkled head and a muzzle that is shorter than the skull. The eyes are almond shaped and small in size. Eyes are often colored from the darker shade of hazel to dark brown. Skull has a flat shape and the ears are small, erect and open from the front. The dog has leveled back and straight legs. The curled tail is set high and the coat is shiny, fine and short. Different colors that can be seen in the breed are copper, black, chestnut red, red or tricolored combinations. According to standards of AKC the dog must have white patch over the chest, tail’s tip and feet.

Giving the Basenji dogs something to chew can keep them happy. One should take care of not keeping any important material or toy near the dog as it has an astounding chewing habit. The dog may end up chewing just about anything. The dog responds very well if trained nicely with a strong pleasing desire. The dog also needs regular exercising and unswerving care.
