Alexandrine Parakeet

Alexandrine Parakeet is a medium sized parrot found mainly in India and Sri Lanka. The dominant color is green and the tail is fairly long but the actual length will depend upon the habitat conditions and nutrition. The bill of the birds is strikingly red and looks beautiful in the background of the green body. In females the green color is darker and the tail feathers in the middle are shorter. In juveniles, however, it is almost impossible to distinguish between the male and the female.

Care

Alexandrine Parrots are popular all over the world as they are easily tamed and given proper training will definitely utter quite a few words. The cage of these birds should not be kept in direct sunlight. There should be enough space in the cage for the free movement of the birds and the cage should be strong enough to withstand the beak power of the bird.

When you are buying this variety remember to get this variety as young as possible so that it can easily get used to the surroundings. Never do anything that will frighten the bird. After it has settled in nicely, you can start giving foods by hand and try to communicate with the parrot.

Diet

Like other parrots, the main diet of the Alexandrine Parrot millet seeds, shelled oats, canary seeds and saffron. It is advised that you should give one fruit every day. The different types of fruit that can be given are: apples, plums, nuts and grapes.

Breeding

The breeding of this type of birds is not at all difficult. Breeding usually start in the month of February. The female hatches 4 eggs and incubation lasts for 26 days or so. The babies will stay in the nest for a week so that the feathers are fully developed. Please remember that the baby birds needs to be fed by hand for better socialization.

The average lifespan of these parrots are 30 years but if the living conditions are good then it can easily live up to 50 years. They are really very easy to tame. They can imitate over 200 words and will definitely imitate the speech (es) that it will hear in your house more often. Though the original color of these birds are green, nowadays they are available in other colors too – blue, lutino and white. Needless to say these varieties are very hard to find and hrder to afford.
