Relief from Allergy: Home Remedies

allergyAllergy can be describes as the state where the slightest contact with substances called ‘allergens’ results in an adverse reaction in the body known as an allergic reaction.

The allergic reaction is caused when the person comes in contact with a substance for the first time; a ‘memory’ of the substance is stored in the cells and next time the person comes in touch with the ‘allergen’ the cells respond by releasing chemicals such as histamine into the blood causing an allergic reaction to the substance.

The symptoms of allergy vary from simple sneezing to itching to sever reactions such as anaphylactic shock. In case of a mild reaction to an allergen, it leads to sneezing, red itchy eyes, wheezing welts on the skin and sometimes an attack of diarrhea. When a serious reaction occurs to the allergen, the person may face such reactions as swelling and spasms of throat, difficulty in breathing, tongue swells, skin rashes, hypo tension etc. Anaphylaxis is a highly life threatening condition.

Mild cases of allergies can be treated by avoiding contact or exposure to the allergens. It is best to avoid foods or other allergens from which a person has adverse reaction. A person who is allergic to a food such as wheat may never suffer from allergic reaction if the person avoids wheat. Antihistamines can also be used to reduce the mild reactions.

For people suffering from severe reactions, ‘epinephrine’ or ‘adrenaline’ is an important drug and is a life-saving drug. It is advised that allergy-sufferer prone to anaphylaxis carry a shot of adrenaline with them at all times.

Allergic reactions can be prevented by identifying the allergen and avoiding it. Common examples of allergens are animal fur, house dust, shellfish, eggs, perfumes, insecticides, pollen and some materials like rubber. Allergens can be identified by taking advice from your doctor.

Another method which is used is immunotherapy and hypo-sensitization where the allergy sufferer is exposed to increasing doses of allergen till the body gets used to the allergen and there is no adverse reaction.

Vitamin C obtained from tomatoes and not from the citrus fruits has been found to be of help in relieving allergies. Honey is also helpful in reducing the adverse reactions from pollen and bee-stings.

There are times when the drugs are not effective in fighting against the attack or the allergic reaction continues even after avoiding all the allergens. In such times it is best to refer to the emergency medical services.
