Medicinal Value of Bottle Gourd

 

bottle-gourdBottle Gourd or Edible Calabash Gourd is a vine which grows in warm climates. Bottle Gourds are of different shapes and sizes. They are easy to grow and disease resistant. It has immense medicinal value as described in Ayurveda. Consumption of Bottle Gourd juice reduces excessive thirst in diabetics. It also reduces the thirst caused by overeating of fried and fatty food. It acts gentle on stomach by reducing acidity and indigestion.

There are a lot of people who suffer from constipation and piles. Flatulence is another common concern which is seen in people today due to irregular food habits. In all these cases if Bottle Gourd  is taken along with required quantity of water per day, positive results can be seen. And if you are one who is trying to shed those extra kilos then make sure that you include this vegetable in daily diet. You can either drink the juice or dice the gourd into small cubes, shallow fry with onions, add a dash of salt and chilli powder. This makes an excellent combination with rice or rotis.

Due to high acidity in urine, some people suffer from burning sensation while passing urine. Bottle Gourd is an excellent medicine for this as well. It also serves as a preventive cure for urinary disorders. It keeps you relaxed and prevents fatigue. Mix the juice of Bottle gourd with sesame oil. Massage this liquid on the scalp for a peaceful sleep. It is an effective medicine for Insomnia. This vegetable is high in choline. A diet deficient in choline can lead to infertility in males.

The flowers of Bottle Gourd are used in the preparation of antidote to poison. The young shoots are also eaten in some countries. Some people make a sweet of this vegetable by grating it and adding the required amount of sugar along with milk. Children can have in this way as they will take in the benefits of milk as well. A little modification in the diet goes a long way in keeping us healthy  to lead a happy life. So why not start making changes?
