Dry Skin: Natural Remedies

cure-dry-skinAlmost all of us have had to contend with dry skin in one weather or another. For some people it is a matter of applying cream while for the others it includes use of costly things from the pharmacy.

There are many home based alternatives that can be used for hydrating and tacking the dry skin. The first thing that can be done is to drink plenty of water throughout the day so as to keep the skin hydrated internally.

A humidifier can be used to keep the skin moist. Take steps to eliminate dryness from your home which in turn will help in reducing the dryness of your skin. Avoid taking very hot bath or shower as this has a tendency of robbing the skin of oils. Use lukewarm water for bathing. Moisturize the skin when it still damp from the bath; it would seal the moisture in the skin.

Avoid soaps that have deodorants included as these tend to have a drying effect on the skin. Avoid products with alcohol content in them as alcohol tends to make the skin dry.

If you are an avid swimmer, take care to wash off all the chlorine and other chemicals after coming out of the pool. Quit smoking as this also makes the skin dry.

Wet some oatmeal (wrapped in a washcloth) in lukewarm water and wash your body and face with this washcloth. This not only helps in cleaning the skin but also makes it soft. It is best to use the non-commercial variety of oatmeal.

Make a mask with egg yolk (scrambled) and apply to the affected areas. Leave it on for about twenty to thirty minutes and wash off with lukewarm water. Honey can be used instead of egg yolk. A paste of honey and oatmeal can also be made to exfoliate and moisturize the skin.

Evening primrose oil and black currant oil are both good sources of GLA (gamma-linolenic acid) and help to promote the healthy growth of skin, hair and nails.

Almond oil is a good moisturizer. It can be massaged onto the affected areas and allowed to be absorbed by the skin. Petroleum jelly and baby oil are also wonderful as moisturizers. For treating extra-dry hands and feet apply petroleum jelly on the affected areas and cover with gloves or socks. It is best to use this method at the night time to allow deep penetration.

Aloe Vera is also a very good moisturizer. Cut off a leaf and apply the juice on the affected area for instant results of softer and smoother skin. Aloe Vera is also wonderful for burns.

Avoid caffeine and alcohol as these act as diuretics causing dehydration. You can opt for chamomile or peppermint tea which also helps to prevent dry skin.
