Alternative therapies for insomnia include therapies from diet to exercise, and from lifestyle change to meditation. A patient may try therapies from aromatherapy, hypnosis, yoga, acupuncture to body massage.
It is necessary that whichever alternative medicine is decided by the patient is carried along with the conventional or allopathic medicine.

Herbs that are used effectively for treating insomnia are valerian roots, chamomile and to a lesser but not less effective extent are ginseng, lemon balm, etc.

These need to be researched extensively, as these are effective in fighting against insomnia. If you decide on starting any of the herbs for treating your insomnia, be sure to inform your healthcare professional, because some of these may affect some medications.

The chemical, Melatonin is also used in treating insomnia especially insomnia brought on due to jet lag. It is a chemical made in human body and also in animals and plants.

Acupuncture is used by traditional Chinese practitioners for treating insomnia. In this needles are planted on the skin at acupuncture points. This has been shown to be a good method to tackle insomnia in recent researches.

Sometimes, stress and mental tension cause insomnia. The methods such as meditation and muscle relaxation work effectively in treating insomnia. It takes time to master these techniques to help you insomnia. If a person practices meditation, yoga or muscle relaxation programs regularly, these have been found to be highly effective in studies.

If a person works out regularly, it helps in controlling insomnia, especially in young adults. Exercise is also said to help older adults for insomnia. Tai chi has also been found to be effective tool against insomnia. It is best to work out at least three to four hours before your bed time to avoid interference in sleep, as high levels of adrenalin also hinders sleep.

These therapies have not been approved by FDA hence it is prudential that you talk to your doctor before starting any of these therapies. In case of any side effects; rash, rapid heartbeat, etc., you should immediately consult a doctor. Check thoroughly before starting a therapy or herbal product for its side effects and contents.
