Jewell Jordan – the stuntwoman dies
The 92 year old stuntwoman responsible behind some great performances such as Lusie Rainer’s Oscar winning performance in “The Good Earth” (1937) and Merle Oberon’s “Wuthering Heights” – Jewell Jordan Mason has died.
For a long time, this woman had worked as an extra who was never credited, and later became a source of inspiration for her niece Gale Anne Hurd, who is now a producer. Jordan worked mainly as a stunt double in Hollywood during the 1930s and 1940s. She has done some incredible work in movies such as “Tarzan Escapes”, “Ninotchka”, “Destry Rides Again”, “Ever Since Eve”, and “New Moon” etc. She has even appeared on- screen along with great actors such as Greta Garbo, Clarke Gable, Marlene Dietrich, David Niven, Bing Crosby, Paul Muni and Johnny Weissmuller etc. Jordan also played the role of Maureen O’Sullivan’s classmate at St. Augustine’s Catholic School in “Culver City”.
However, the brave woman’s career did not invole just glamour. Despite the fact that she was working in Hollywood, which man mistake to be a place of only luxuries, Jordan had to undergo a lot of trials and tribulations. During the long span of her career, there were multiple times when she was hurt or injured severely. There were instances when she has had broken ribs, and has even suffered from a dislocated shoulder, hip and wrist. She even suffered from constant back problems, and all this happened at a time when there was no medical insurance or any other similar coverage or security for stunt performers.
The great stuntwoman’s career has now found a place in Mollie Gregory’s book about stuntwomen, which is all set to be published next year by University of California Press.
Jordan was one among the five sisters in her house and had helped her family pay for her tuition at St. Augustine’s by working at MGM Studios nearby. She found employment as an extra at the age of eight. The dedicated woman worked after school to earn money.
