Birla Institute of Technology and Science, which we commonly refer to as BITS was originally started as a small school by its founder and eminent industrialist Mr.G.D.Birla during the beginning of the 20th century. This slowly developed into a group of colleges imparting education in various fields ranging from Engineering to Humanities and during 1964 these group of colleges clubbed together to form Birla Institute of Technology and Science, a university which during present times has received international recognition and has effectively maintained such standards. The university which admits student’s purely on merit basis has produced many efficient students in various sectors namely commerce, science and technology and it has always inculcated the can-do attitude among its students and encouraged entrepreneurship. The institute has been accredited with grade ‘A’ by NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Centre). BITS currently has acquired a world standing and is one of the few institutions in India which impart high quality education and is a leader among institutions when it come to providing high quality higher education in India.

BITS offers various programs in the following disciplines namely chemistry, biological sciences, chemical engineering, economics and finance, computer science and information systems, civil engineering, humanistic studies, engineering technology, electrical and electronics/instrumentation, management, mathematics, languages, physics, pharmacy and mechanical engineering. The institute also has various centers which supports various activities. To name a few are Centre for Educational Technology, Professional Development Centre, Centre for Women Studies, Centre for Entrepreneurial Leadership etc.

The institution offers 3 different types of educational programs which are integrated first degree program, higher degree programs and doctoral programs. For the integrated first degree program, admission is based purely on the 12th standard marks obtained by the student and admission is based purely on merit.

For higher degree programs, an integrated first degree program should be completed successfully and based on the performance and an on-line test conducted by BITS, students are provided admissions. For the Ph.D. programs, a master’s degree needs to be completed from BITS or equivalent institution and based on a written test and interview, admissions are granted. The institution also offers multiple off-campus Ph.D. in collaboration with various research organizations.

The institution also offers work-integrated learning & collaborative programs so that employees work and simultaneously study too and the this was established 1979 due to the practical schools interaction with various industries, research organizations and institutions.

The institution also offers multiple student welfare programs, research and consultancy services, educational development services and academic registration and counseling facilities to its student body and facilitates students to develop themselves to meet various challenges in their respective fields and be a leader in this challenging world. Apart from its Pilani campus, BITS now has campuses at Goa, Hyderabad and Dubai.
