Pruritis is linked with underlying systemic illness or some bothersome itching. A common cause for this condition is excessive cleaning of an anal region. Moisture that is present around the anus, from sweat or moisture, sticking stools can also give raise to this condition.

Drinking some kinds of beverages such as alcoholic beverages, citrus juice, milk, and drinks that contain caffeine might aggravate such condition. Other rare components might include pinworm, psoriasis, eczemas, dermatitis, anal infection and certain allergy. People suffering from pruritis would have a complete evaluation for excluding serious anal or rectal illness that might require medical or surgical attention. Itching can then be treated with dietary restriction and topical lotion. One should drink plenty of fluids for keeping the body well hydrated is again beneficial.

The dehydration causes the skin drying out and become itchier. If the cause of Pruritis is not found or removed, the condition is cured by advising the person to avoid overheating, alcohol-based and hot drinks. If one does suffer from Pruritis then he or she knows that trying to sleep during the evenings is looked to be almost troublesome and impossible. Antihistamine reduces symptoms of some allergic reactions like rashes, hives and shortness of breath known as breathlessness or dyspnea. Causes of Pruritis

As said earlier, a commonest cause of pruritis is excessive cleaning of the anal region.   12. Hypothyroidism
  13. Hyperthyroidism
  14. Iron deficiency anemia
  15. Polycythemia vera

Signs and Symptoms of Pruritis

The disease has some typical signs and symptoms as following:

  • Intense itching.
  • Shortness of breath or breathlessness (dyspnea)
  • Wheezing sounds
  • Swelling in the face or throat
  • Difficulty breathing

Treatment for Pruritis

If the cause of Pruritis cannot be detected or gotten rid of, the condition is then cured with some important advices like a patient should be avoiding all the beverages that overheat the body such as alcohol and other brain stimulating hot drinks. The sufferer should also avoid certain fabrics like as wool and synthetics those might make the skin itching. To relieve itching, one can place a cool washcloth or some icepack onto the affected areas that itch, rather than to scratch. People suffering from pruritis ani should have complete evaluations to exclude any severe anal or rectal diseases those may end up into life threatening diseases and seek medical or surgical treatments. Along with all the treatment, dietary changes and local supplements are also given.

To get rid of any small particles of motion, the area is to be kept thoroughly cleansed by washing with lukewarm water.

One should keep the bowels regular with a high fiber diet or fiber supplements.

Antipruritic drugs can reduce itching. Such drugs are generally antihistamines or mint - like substance such as menthols or camphor.

Calamine lotion, a zinc-based anti-pruritic is popularly used drug.

Mild topical corticosteroids for short term are useful.
