Most of us end up experiencing burns from incidents like washing up under a too-hot faucet or by an accidental tipping of a coffee cup, or scalds from hot water and liquids, etc. Children are more vulnerable to the burns when compared to adults because of their curiosity in testing things and also because of their sensitive skin.
Minor burns can be treated at home. Where as the major burns need a proper medical care. Burns are generally categorized into different types based on the extent of burning.
The different types of burns are:-
First-degree burns:
All minor burns are first degree burns where only the top layer of the skin gets damaged. Proper care at home can help in curing these burns. Symptoms like redness, pain, and minor swelling indicate a first degree burn. A first degree burn may take about 3 to 6 days to heal completely. The burnt layer generally sheds off in a day and a new layer is formed.
Second-degree burns:
Damage to the layers beneath the skin indicates a second degree burn. A second degree burn is considered to be more serious. Symptoms like blisters, severe pain, and redness indicate a second degree burn. Blisters are considered to be very sensitive as most of the times they break up exposing a wet bright pink skin.
Third-degree burns:
Damage to the tissues present beneath the skin including all its layers is considered to be a third degree burn. This type of burns is considered to be the most serious ones. The damaged area becomes dry, waxy white, leathery, brown, or charred. Nerve damage is also seen in most of the cases because of which a no pain is felt by the patient. Instead a numb feeling is experienced at the damaged site. A good medical care is a must in case of these burns. Most of the times, a skin graft is recommended to conceal the damaged part.
